SIBU: A new native market will be set up at the former Jalan Lanang bridge toll station.

This was announced by deputy chairman of Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC), Robert Lau Hui Yew, who said the initial target was to have 10 stalls and the stallholders being the residents of the nearby areas.

“Hopefully, the project would reach completion by end of January next year,” he said before the launch of a clean-up campaign at the site of the former Jalan Lanang Bridge toll station yesterday morning.

The activity, jointly run by SRDC and Area 12 Neighbourhood Liaison Committee, was to clean and beautify the former toll station and its surrounding areas.

Lau said the setting up of the native market in the area would boost the economy of the local residents.

He added that the site, used by long distance travellers to rest, was strewn with rubbish thrown indiscriminately, making the area an eyesore.

On another matter, Lau urged Area 12 Neighbourhood Liaison Committee to set up a library here, as a way to encourage children to read and also prevent them from engaging in anti-social activities.
