MIRI: The Rotary Club of Miri Oil Town (RCMOT) successfully raised money to buy 800 schoolbags as part of the nationwide effort by 77 Rotary Clubs under Rotary Foundation of Malaysia to procure 21,000 durable schoolbags for distribution to underprivileged students.

“Miri is fortunate to be served by a very dedicated public sector and this year, from nine kind donors here, RCMOT raised RM18,300 to buy some 800 bags to match donations of various government departments. The bags are for children of the low income staff,” said RCMOT president Chan Soon Onn during the handing over of the schoolbags at Miri Hospital yesterday.

The hospital’s staff and children were among the five beneficiaries in Miri. Four others were from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Immigration Department, Land and Survey Department and the police.

Miri Hospital director Dr Jack Wong and Miri Fire chief Law Poh Kiong were amongst the representatives of the various departments who received the bags from RCMOT.

Chan added the ‘Bag2school Project’ with the tagline ‘21,000 smiles’ was part of projects focusing on serving, especially the under-privileged community.

“Having previously executed projects for the rural communities such as ‘We Love Kids Initiatives’, rural medical missions and sponsoring of patients for cataract and heart operations, the Bag2school Project is meant for the urban lower-income group who deserve recognition and support,” Chan added.
