300 benefit from health screening at Uma Balui

BINTULU: Over 300 longhouse folk in Sungai Asap benefited from a health screening programme held at Uma Balui in Belaga recently.

The programme was held in conjunction with the Cancer Awareness Outreach 2019 for the local community at Apau Koyan.

The programme was officiated by a special advisor (Sarawak Affairs) in the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office Datuk Seri Hafsah Harun.

In her speech, Hafsah emphasised the importance of healthcare at the early stage.

The programme was organised by Pertubuhan Komuniti Harapan Orang Ulu Kuching Sarawak and Murum Belaga Women Association in collaboration with National Population and Family Development Board.

Dr Yolanda Augustin, who is the patron and programme advisor, said she was attracted to be involved in social work to help the rural community.

Meanwhile, organising chairman Bilong Siting and advisor for Pertubuhan Komuniti Harapan Orang Ulu Kuching Sarawak said they are committed to bringing more social welfare activities to the people living in rural areas in the state.

“May be in the future we can organise similar programmes for the people along the Batang Balui, Belaga,” he said.

A medical officer from Sungai Asap Clinic gave a talk on cancer awareness and implication to the the Apau Koyan community.

Bulan Christy, one of the residents, said the programme was very good and informative especially for the women in Sungai Asap to get early test and treatment.

Another participant, Edward Ugah, agreed that it was a good programme that enabled the rural folk to get free health screening.

Also present was Miri MP Dr Michael Teo.
