SIBU: People from all walks of life here are strongly encouraged to go for medical check-up as early detection for any kind of illness, including diabetes.

Member of Parliament for Sibu Oscar Ling stressed that this is because prevention is better than cure.

He was speaking at the ‘World Diabetes Day 2019’ held at Sibu Central Market yesterday.

It was organised by the Sibu Hospital in collaboration with Sibu Divisional Health Office and the Sarawak Midwives Association Sibu branch.

Sibu Hospital director Associate Prof Dr Ngian Hie Ung, Dr Siti Romahani Rahman from Sibu Divisional Health Office who was representing Sibu health officer Dr Teh Jo Hun, Sarawak Midwives Association Sibu chairperson Patimah Duad and the event organizing chairperson Florence Ho Mee Chiun were present.

“Going for early detection of any illness including diabetes will enable us to have early treatment which is definitely good for our own health in the long run.

“In other words, we should not delay from going for medical check-up so that we can enjoy better and healthy life,” he added.

Ling pointed out that people would pay more for medical treatment if they fall sick.

“Once they fall sick, their daily routine and productivity would be affected.

“That is why as I had mentioned earlier on, prevention is definitely better than cure,” he added.

The MP extended his thanks and appreciation to Sibu Hospital, Sibu Divisional Health Office and the Sarawak Midwives Association Sibu branch for their joint effort in running the event.

“The PH government always strongly emphasises on the importance of people having good health,” he said.

He added that events like this would create greater level of awareness of diabetes among the people of Sibu.

“It will also encourage people to go for medical health check for early diabetes detection so that early treatment can be given,” he said.

The event which received overwhelming response from the public targeted to have some 1,000 people coming to have medical check for diabetes.

Meanwhile, according to Ho, diet is the best way to control diabetes.

“This is because if we do not control our diet the effect of exercise would be less.

“That is why today for the first time we have the diabetes diet cooking demonstration to show how we can prepare delicious and healthy diabetes meal for the whole family.

“This is because a lot of people are still thinking that diabetes diet is tasteless and not nice to eat,” she added.
