Kitchen helper gets 5 years’ jail for attempted robbery


KUCHING: An attempt to rob a shop using a knife (kerambit) on Nov 12 has resulted in a kitchen helper to be jailed for five years by the Sessions Court here yesterday.

Judge Mohd Taufik Mohd @ Mohd Yusoff also imposed seven strokes of the cane on Awang Saufie Jasni, 33, after he pleaded guilty to the charge. According to the charge, the accused tried to rob an Indonesian national who was working at the shop at Taman Lee Hing Commercial Centre in Jalan Matang here around 12.30am on Nov 12.

According to the facts of case, the accused used a kerambit (knife) to threaten the victim before he was caught by members of the public, and handed over to the police.

He was charged on two accounts: attempted robbery under Section 393 of the Penal Code, read with Section 397 of the same code, which provide for three-year jail and five strokes of ther cane; and under Section 6 (1) of the Explosives and Dangerous Weapons Act 1958 for having a dangerous weapon without permission from the authorities, an offence which provides for a five-year jail and three srokes of the cane on conviction.

The court ordered that the jail sentences to run concurrently.

The accused, meanwhile, pleaded for a lighter sentence, saying he regretted his action and promising not to do such act again.

“My father is a pensioner and my mother a housewife who both need me to take care of them,” he said.

Deputy public prosecutor Daniel Ilham Kamaruddin prosecuted while the accused was not represented.
