Helicopter ride for three terminally ill children

KOTA KINABALU: Three terminally ill children were treated to a 20-minute helicopter ride from Tanjung Aru to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) under the ‘Your Wishes, We Fulfil’ program by UMS.

UMS deputy dean of Student Affairs, Alumni and Community Network, Dr Yeap Boon Tat said that the program was a Community Service Responsibility (CSR) and to commemorate the special silver anniversary of UMS’ establishment this year.

He said the program which was organized for terminally ill children for the second time this year, was in collaboration with Sabah Air Aviation Sdn Bhd, Medical Students Association (MEDSTAS), Persatuan Alumni FMHS (PALM FMHS) and Care of Terminally Ill Programme Masjid Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu (COTI MBR).

Mohd Saifullah Jidin, 9, Mohd Azlan Abdullah, 7, and Athirah Mohamed, 11, had their wish for a helicopter ride fulfilled yesterday.

Accompanied by pilot Captain Mahmud Mohamad and two medical personnel, the children were flown up to 400 feet above sea level and landed safely at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science (FMHS) at 2.50 pm.

Apart from that, FHMS is also organizing its second Medical Convo Fiesta 2019 which saw the participation of Persatuan Perubatan Desa Sabah (PERDESA), PALM FMHS and MEDSTAS.

The fiesta is also in conjunction with the UMS’ 21st Convocation Ceremony 2019 (November 21 and 22) at Dataran Alumni, FHMS.

Among the highlights in the Medical Convo Fiesta are CPR & Basic Life Support demonstration, Body Composition Analysis, Mental Health Screening, Breast Self-Examination, Common Tumors Awareness, Physical Fitness Test, Children Assessment Test, Breast Feeding, Food Poisoning Knowledge, Basic Health Screening, Quit Smoking and Bone Density Scan.

There will also be a Medical Museum Visit, DaVinci Club Exhibition, National Anti Drugs Agency (AADK) Booth exhibition, Busking Performances and Tamu Medic. Admission is free to the public.

Also present during the event were UMS deputy vice chancellor Assoc Prof Datuk Dr Raman Noordin, Sabah Air Aviation Chief Pilot Captain Azahari Ahmad and Chairperson of COTI MBR Programme Kota Kinabalu, Datuk Dr Suzain Suhaimi.
