SIBU: The Kanowit branch of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) had pledged its full support to PKR Sarawak chairman Baru Bian.

Branch deputy chairman Thomas Laja said Baru is not only a pragmatic and dynamic leader, but one “who does not practise double-standard”.

“We back him up 100 per cent. By right, the MPN has complete autonomy, meaning that any convention in Sarawak, MPN has priority to organise (it)…,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday, referring to the decision by the party’s state leadership council (MPN) to cancel the PKR Sarawak Convention.

The convention, however, proceeded to be held in Miri as scheduled on Saturday – officiated by PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim – after the party’s central leadership overruled the state MPN’s decision.

On this, Thomas said what mattered most now was for PKR to work as one in preparing for the next state election.

“I think we should move forward and focus on strengthening the party,” he said.

The MPN had scrapped the event in protest of the party’s move to stop deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali from opening the PKR youth congress in Melaka next month.
