MIRI: A 24-hour flood hotline should be set up to report flooding during the monsoon season, suggests Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting.
He advised those living in the lowlands to be always prepared in the event of flooding.
“Some residents do not expect floods to occur in their areas; thus, they do not even know the channels to contact for help,” he said yesterday.
“Two families from Pujut Tanjung Batu contacted me at about 1.40am today (yesterday). Then I called the Fire and Rescue Department to provide immediate assistance to the affected families,” said Ting, who is Assistant
Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
Ting said it was important for a 24-hour flood hotline to be set up for flood victims to provide information and seek assistance. Local community leaders must also assist the community.
“We expect many areas in Miri to be hit by flash floods if heavy rain continues for five hours like yesterday,” he said.
On another matter, Ting said he was leaving it to Miri City Council (MCC) to resolve the issue of Kampung Lereng Bukit multipurpose hall upgrading works, which did not meet the council’s standards and specifications.
“We have received complaints that there are deficiencies in the project to upgrade the hall, as it does not comply with MCC standards and specifications.
“The walls of the hall were not painted and the floor was not plastered with tiles when the cost was actually included in the total construction cost of RM200,000,” he stated.
Ting added that the issues of contractors not complying with the original project agreement had been documented for and submitted to MCC for further action.
