KUCHING: SMK St Teresa has received a cheque for RM50,000 from Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Yeo Bee Yin.

The cheque was presented recently to the school officials by Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii, who explained that the fund was meant to help SMK St Teresa build a new block and also rebuild the multipurpose hall, which was damaged during a fire in 2016.

“I met the principal, the teachers and staff members, as well as the contractors for the
new school block project,” he added.

Dr Yii also said the fund was on top of the RM50,000 that he presented to the school’s board a few months ago – serving as the first payment of the RM100,000 that he had earlier pledged to the school to kick off its fundraising campaign to build a new multipurpose hall.

On Oct 29, 2016, fire struck SMK St Teresa’s assembly hall block, which also housed the staff room, library, sewing room, music room, counselling room and printing room.

The incident left the entire block unsafe for occupation.

Demolition works and erection of perimeter metal structure-hoarding commenced after that, and reached completion in April last year, costing RM281,917, which was borne by the Ministry of Education.

The estimated cost of the two-phase rebuilding project is RM7.9 million.
