Cultural festival to revive, promote Kenyah culture

MIRI: The Development Committee of Kedaya Telang Usan (DCKTU) recently held the Kedaya Telang Usan Cultural Festival at Kampung Lio Mato in Ulu Baram.

DCKTU chairwoman Annia Selalang, in a press release here yesterday, said the two-day event was an annual activity organised by DCKTU to revive and further promote the unique culture of the Kenyah community.

“This is the second year we organised such programme
in an ongoing effort to further promote our culture not just to the Kenyah’s younger generations but also to those outside the community,” she said.

Annia said a total of nine Kenyah villages participated in activities held during the two-day festival.

Among activities held were cultural competitions for traditional long dance, traditional solo dance, traditional singing and sports like aerobics.

Deputy Speaker of State Legislative Assembly Datuk Gerawat Gala, who is also Mulu assemblyman, in his opening address, noted that the festival could become an annual event and a tourist attraction if more efforts were carried out to promote it.

Meanwhile, Baram Member of Parliament Anyi Ngau, who officiated at the closing ceremony, congratulated the DCKTU for successfully organising the festival and pointed out that the festival
could contribute towards economic development in Telang Usan.
