KUCHING: The Department of Education Sarawak (JPNS) will follow the standard operating procedure (SOP) provided by the Ministry of Education in addressing floods affecting schools.

JPNS director Dr Azhar Ahmad says the SOP include steps to be taken to reduce damage to assets and also obstacles faced by students going to school.

“The District Education Office (PPD), our headmasters and principals are ready with this SOP,” he said when met by reporters after launching the JPNS Family Day Programme 2019 at the department’s Jalan Diplomatik headquarters here yesterday.

Azhar said 18 schools under four PPDs in Sarawak were affected by the floods this month.

The PPDs are those in Baram, Tatau, Bintulu and Lawas districts.

“Right now, it is the school holidays. However, we have directed all schools to prepare for the flood situation by moving goods, furniture and more to higher ground,” he said.

Asked on the extent of damage caused by the floods so far, Azhar said he could not give the exact figure as there could be more floods affecting the schools.

“However, last year the number of flood damage was minimal, compared to 2017, involving many schools in Sarawak. We have repaired all the affected schools,” he said.

On the ‘Family Day’ programme, Azhar said this annual event hosted 800 educators and their families.

“The JPNS Family Day Programme is one of the recreational activities to foster friendship and relationship among the officials and staff members,” he said.

Various activities were held including aerobics, the launch of JPNS Cycling Club, a colouring competition and sales bazaar.
