Miri Divisional Engineer of Public Works Department (JKR) Chong Chi Fam confirmed the incident at Sungai Miri Abutment A, where two workers were injured, with one with serious injuries.

The workers were rushed immediately to Miri Hospital for emergency treatment.

Investigations are underway to identify the cause of accident which would be included in the full incident report later.

The Borneo Post learnt that the beam launch was undertaken by a specialist bridge contractor appointed by Pekerjaan Piasau Konkerit Sdn Bhd.

It was reported that the specialist has put up seven girder beams for Span 2 of the Sungai Miri Bridge and it was completed shortly before the collapse.

Four beams were already up earlier this week, using two heavy-duty mobile cranes and two prime movers.

The remaining beams have to be welded to stabilize the girder beams vertically to work on Span 1.

It was suspected that the incident occurred during the welding process, with beams toppling and damaging the crane and prime mover below.

Meanwhile, the contractor is reported to have ordered the structure to be reinforced to avoid the recurrence of such an incident.
