KUCHING: Upgrading family and public recreational parks and facilities are among agendas to be implemented next year, and which was discussed during the Kuching City South Council (MBKS) full meeting yesterday.

Its mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said next year’s agenda would be more into enhancing and upgrading of public amenities within their jurisdiction.

“We will also empower community leaders and JKKKs to help us look into some of the projects like cleaning of drains, cutting of grass, and making public areas and infrastructure clean and tidy,” said Wee at the last full council meeting for the year, which was attended by all councillors.

Wee took over the mayorship from Datuk James Chan Khay Syn in September.

Wee said many recreational places and facilities within their jurisdiction were probably forgotten and neglected, like the MBKS Swimming Pool, the Traffic Garden in Kenyalang Park, and the basketball court at the Indoor Stadium, to name a few, which would require upgrading to attract families and the younger people to patronise them.

“These facilities need upgrading and we want to change the concept that will attract families to patronise them. For example, if you patronise the MBKS swimming pool with your children, and parents, you can also go for a walk or jog at a park nearby.

“Technology has driven everyone apart, so I think we need to rebuild that ‘togetherness spirit’ among families and friends, and make MBKS areas people-centric areas. Our New Year countdown this year will be held at the square opposite the MBKS building. Come join us.”

He added that MBKS would want to be a city council-friendly entity, encouraging more people to use readily available facilities, and also to let more people know about the various facilities in the MBKS jurisdication.

MBKS has 7 or 8 recreational parks and facilities, which include Traffic Garden, Friendship Park, Hokkien Garden, Hui Sing Garden, and the Indoor stadium at Jalan Pending.
