KUCHING: Sarawak’s junior golf stars Malcolm Ting Siong Hung and his younger sister Mirabel Ting Ern Hui capped a fine year of golf with podium finishes at the 8th Pondok Indah International Junior Golf Championship in Jakarta, Indonesia recently.

At the Pondok Indah Golf Club, Malcolm shot a three-day total gross score of five-under par 211 to finish second in Boys A and was the best Malaysian winner.

He started the 36-player field with a par 72 on the first day, one-under par 71 on the second day and a splendid four-under par 68 on the third day.

Indonesia’s Amadeus Christian Susanto was crowned the Boys overall champion with his score of nine-under par 207 (66-73-68) while Justin Kuk of Singapore bagged the Boys A title with a six-under par 210.

“This tournament went quite well. I played a really solid game and had a very good week in Jarkarta,” said Malcolm.

He was also very happy with his overall performance for the whole year.

“I never thought it could be as good as this. I am always hoping to be better and ever improving on my weaknesses,” he said.

Malcolm will not be having high expectations for the new year but said that he would do his best and try to perform well in all tournaments.

“I will be joining more international tournaments next year to gain more experience overseas and improve my game,” he added.

Mirabel carded a five-over par 221 (77-72-72) to lift the Girls B title and she was the best Malaysian finisher in the category participated by 21 players from Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Singapore’s Anne Legi Fernandez was second four strokes further while Indonesian challenger Elaine Widjaya finished third on 229 strokes.

Mirabel admitted that the result was not up to her expectations as she had aimed for better scores and play under-par golf.

“Overall, I feel that it was a good 2019 for me and I am hoping for a better 2020.

“I will try to win bigger tournaments and focus more on my studies and game,” she added.

The Ting siblings, who are studying at Hills Academy in Brisbane, Australia, will next play in the prestigious Australian Amateur Masters Championship at the Victoria Golf Club from Jan 7 to 10 next year.
