About 70 per cent of decorations have already been up and will be officially lighted up on Jan 7.

MIRI: Preparations for the Gong Xi Fa Cai Bazaar 2020 are well on track with contractors having put up about 70 per cent of the lightings and decorations for the much anticipated bazaar which will be held from Jan 17 to 24.

“This year, we will be focusing more on floral theme, as seen from the lightings and decorations which are of different floral designs. There will also be a display of Rat Zodiac on the island (junction between Jalan High Street and Jalan Raja) to reflect the Year of Rat,” said the secretariat of Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI).

It is estimated that all the work will be done by the end of this week, and the final checking will be done by next Monday.

“Jalan High Street and Jalan Raja will be officially lighted up on Jan 7. The ceremony will be graced by the MCCCI working committee chairman, Lee Khoi Yun.”

Despite facing competition from other events in Miri, members of the public, especially shutter bugs, can look forward to the bazaar as this year, there will be a photography contest held during the event.

“The ‘Miri CNY Bazaar, Our Glory’ photography contest gives shutterbugs the opportunity to go around the bazaar, taking the best photo of any scene, the human interaction, the beautiful lightings and many other attractions. These photos can be used in the contest to win cash prizes.”

A contractor is in the midst of putting up the lighting and decorations at Jalan High Street.

Top three winners of the photo contest will get to win RM800, RM500 and RM300 cash prize respectively and certificate; whilst RM100 and certificate each will be given to seven consolation prize winners.

The winners will be announced at the prize giving ceremony on Jan 23 at the stage in front of the old Resident’s and District Office car park area.

Meanwhile, the working committee also introduced the ‘Best Stall’ contest that is open to all traders at the bazaar to encourage the traders to decorate their respective stalls, as a way to create a nice ambience for the Spring Festival.

All stall tenants are eligible for the Best Stall contest and no entry fee is imposed.
