Several smokers at eateries compounded

SIBU: Several compounds were issued against people found smoking at eateries here yesterday morning.

Divisional health officer Dr Teh Jo Hun said they were hoping to see fewer compounds issued in the coming days.

“Today (yesterday) marks the start of enforcement action against ‘No Smoking’ within 10 feet of eateries.

“The compound is RM250, which has to be paid at the health office after the offender receives the compound.

“They don’t pay on the spot,” he said via WhatsApp yesterday.

Twelve environmental health officers and staff headed by senior assistant health officer Wilfred John from the Health Department here conducted a three-hour enforcement on the smoking ban at eateries here yesterday.

“We planned our enforcement action by zones, covering the main areas of downtown Sibu within these two weeks,” he added.

Failure to settle the compound within 90 days of the date of issuance will result in
offenders being charged in court where they can be fined RM10,000 or jailed up to two years.
