KUCHING: Students should consider the availability of jobs before choosing their course of study in higher education, opines Minister of Education, Science and Technological Research Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong.

Manyin said the job market today was very different compared to the 60s and 70s and having a qualification did not necessarily mean that a graduate would get a job after graduating.

“When you think about getting your qualification, now you have to think if it can secure you a job or not after you graduate. For example, nowadays graduates with qualifications in social sciences are finding it harder to get a job, but graduates with qualifications in technical or vocational skills are able to get jobs within six months of graduating,” Manyin said.

He was speaking at the ‘Towards Educational Cooperation and Regional Development’ conference cum Malaysia-Indonesia Study Go China conference at the Islamic Information Centre here yesterday.

The conference, which was organised by the ACEC Association, talked about scholarship options and study opportunities in China, and was attended by six universities from China; namely Beijing Wuzi University, Anhui Medical University, University of Science and Technology of China, Ningxia Medical University, Dalian University of Technology and China Pharmaceutical University.

Also present at the conference was ACEC Association executive director Channing Yang.
