Duo contest robbery charge

MIRI : A magistrate’s court here set February 13 for the further mention of a case involving two friends who pleaded not guilty against the charge of robbing a teenager.

Both accused have been ordered to be further detained after they failed to pay the RM5,000 bail money with two local sureties.

Slyvester William Olivia, 22 from Quadruplex, Permyjaya and Mohamad Zulkefli Mahari, 25, from Kampung Peliau Bungai, Sibuti were charged under Section 395 of the Penal Code.

For the offence, they can be jailed up to 20 years and whipped upon conviction.

Based on the charge, the two accused were charged of gang robbery by confiscating a handphone belonging to Steve Along Irine, 20.

They allegedly committed the offence at 12 noon on December 13, 2019 at Lorong 12, Pusat Internet Quadruplex Bandar Baru Permyjaya here.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Aftal Mariz Mohamed prosecuted the case in front on Judge Steve Ritikos who was sitting in for a magistrate, while both accused were not represented.

In an unrelated case, a teenage foreigner was sentenced to five months jail by a Sessions court here for abusing his social visit pass.

The court ordered the sentence on him to take effect on the day of his arrest which was December 20 last year.

Erwin, 17, from West Kalimantan, Indonesia was charged according to Section 39 (b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963 which carries a fine up to RM1,000 or jail or both upon conviction.

Erwin committed the offence at 3.42pm on December 20 last year at a premises at Permy Technology Park, Permyjaya here.

The court also ordered the accused to be referred to the Immigration Department for deportation once he completed his sentence.
