KAPIT: Colourful murals depicting local themes and iconic products adorn many landmarks of this town such as the Gelanggang (Courtyard) Kenyalang, Kapit Megamall, Kapit District Council Library.

This just-completed initiative was carried out by the National Art Gallery, and it involved six mural artists – two from Peninsular Malaysia, two from Kuching and one each from Kapit and Mukah.

The objectives of the project are to make the plain public buildings and structures here more vibrant, and also to show the variety and uniqueness of Kapit.

“Many of the subjects portrayed on these murals are some of Kapit’s most recognisable produce like the ‘paku’ and ‘midin’ (wild ferns and fern-buds), ‘dabai’ (local olive), durian, and ‘empurau’ which is a highly-prized and very expensive fish.

“Some also depict our traditional heritage like our famous ‘pua kumbu’ and handicrafts,” said a spokesperson.
