SIBU: University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) and Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU), with the objective of cooperating in human capital development through training or other industry-engaged learning programmes.

UCTS was represented by its vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Ab Hamid at the signing ceremony yesterday, while SEB was represented by its group chief operating officer Lu Yew Hung.

According to Khairuddin, the establishment of the MoU marks a significant milestone that demonstrates the strong relationship between UCTS and SEB.

“The MoU that we are signing today is to establish and facilitate the ‘Campus Ambassador’ programme.

“On behalf of the UCTS, I feel honoured for being selected by SEB to collaborate in this programme,” he said.

Dr Khairuddin also pointed out that such strategic partnership would be set to become a platform for UCTS alumni to grab employment opportunities in SEB which, in turn, would help nurture more local talents in the relevant disciplines.

It would also allow for further exploration of possible collaborations relating to science-technology-engineering-mathematics (STEM) outreach and corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities, he added.

“The most important thing that I want to highlight is the generosity of SEB in providing the scholarships and financial sponsorships to our students.

“I’m confident that the MoU would mark the beginning of a strong and fruitful partnership between the UCTS and the SEB.”

Meanwhile in his address earlier, Lu regarded the MoU as the means to expand and facilitate SEB’s ‘Campus Ambassador’ programme, which was launched in 2018.

At present, it is known that SEB has engaged nine universities in Malaysia via its ‘Campus Ambassador’ programme.

According to Lu, the programme provides a platform for SEB to establish and strengthen its working relationship with the selected local universities in areas of mutual interests.

This, he said, would create early awareness in the student body of ‘SEB’s attractiveness as a potential employer and the vision of driving Sarawak’s development’.

“We believe the programme will act as an enabler for us to be the ‘early bird’ in the industry to acquire the best Sarawak talents in the job market, and to achieve a sustainable and continuous supply of talents in SEB in the short, medium and long term.

“We want them to consider us as their first employer of choice.

“Last year, SEB was voted as one of Sarawakians’ top three preferred companies in the ‘JobStreet.com Malaysia Survey 2019’ for new job seekers, and also as the top Sarawakian company.

“We are also recognised as among the ‘Best Companies to Work For in Asia’ at the HR Asia Awards Malaysia,” Lu said, adding that SEB was pleased to be establishing a new collaboration with UCTS in the areas of employment opportunities, scholarship, student’s sponsorship and internship.
