KUCHING: The Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department has called on road users to be more courteous and abide by traffic laws during the coming Chinese New Year celebration.

Its chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu in a statement said among the most important aspects is to not go over the speed limit.

“Take for example, on federal roads, the speed limit is 90km/h which should not be exceeded,” said Alexson.

He also said drivers and co-drivers should make an effort to be familiar with important road signs as these are indicators of what to expect up ahead – such as a bumpy road or a sharp bend.

He also advised against driving slowly on the right lane as the right lane is used for driving at the allowable speed limit and overtaking.

He also said another aspect that drivers should take into account is to keep their vehicle at a safe distance from the vehicle in front of them to allow a safe braking distance.

“If there are police personnel or other enforcement agencies giving directions on the road, please obey their orders for your own and the safety of others,” he added.

He advised drivers going for a long journey to ensure that their vehicle is road worthy and have a co-driver on hand to take over the wheels.
