KUCHING: Over RM300,000 was spent by Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to improve PPR Batu Gong near Siburan, Mile 18, Kuching-Serian Road last year.

HDC head of project implementation section Mimi Sulastrie Jeman said the maintenance works include major roof repair (RM 20,811), sewage pipe repair (RM 14,410) and normal repair for re-offer and common area (RM316,914.50)

She said an allocation of RM977,116.20 had been approved by the Ministry of Local Government and Housing for repair works under the PPP for PPR Batu Gong this year.

“Repair works will involve roof repair and upgrading of rooting structure to lightweight steel roofing truss.

“The tender for the repair works will be tendered out later this year,” she said after handing over angpows and hampers to four tenants in conjunction with the Chinese New Year at Block G of PPR Batu Gong.

The angpows and hampers were donated by the HDC Welfare, Sports and Recreation Club and presented by political secretary to the chief minister Tan Kai.

PPR Batu Gong was completed on December 19, 2013 and has 500 units for rental (RM150 a month) and recreational facilities — children playground, surau, hall and kindergarten – shop units, elevated water tank and sewerage treatment plant.

The flats were constructed for the resettlement of squatters.

Currently, 389 units are occupied while the remaining 111 are in the process of being offered for rent.

Earlier, Tan Kai commended HDC Welfare, Sports and Recreational Club for remembering the hardcore poor families on this festive season.

“I was told that the five recipients they have selected today are the hardcore poor Chinese families.

“The five were from the various squatter areas in Serian, Mile 7 and Pending before. Thank you to HDC for providing a proper rented home for them and cheering their Chinese New Year celebration,” he said.

Tan Kai hoped all the families that are renting at the flats at Batu Gong will motivate and encourage their children to pursue higher education so that they can get better paid job or do businesses and buy a permanent home of their own one day.

He said the flats are only for rent, not to be bought or owned.
