KUCHING: Seeing visitors of various racial and religious backgrounds coming together during Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) open house today is a great indicator of how harmonious Sarawakians are during festive celebrations, opined Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Sunny weather on the first day of the Chinese New Year celebrations also augurs well for the party, Abang Johari added.

“Well, today the weather is good, people are coming out. What is important is that we maintain the harmonious relationship among the various races. Everybody is now celebrating Chinese New Year,” he said when met by reporters at the SUPP open house at its headquarters here this morning.

Party president Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian couldn’t agree more with Abang Johari, saying that the good weather and blue skies “signifies strength for Sarawak”.

“So this new year, Sarawak will work towards prosperity and become strong so that we Sarawakians will be able to take care of ourselves.

“Prosperity is not only in terms of money. We want to be prosperous in terms of human resources and so on,” he said.

He added that Abang Johari had started the ball rolling in this regard, and the state is expected to earn more than twice the revenue in the coming years compared to 2018.

“Since 2018 till now our income has increased and will continue to grow and is expected to double over the next two to three years.

“Our growth in 2018 was around RM5-6 billion per year, and would probably increase to RM18-20 billion in five years,” he said.

When questioned about the party’s confidence in the next state election, Dr Sim said the party has always been ready all the time even after the last state and general elections.

“We have never stopped (preparing). After election on day one we already started because in Sarawak we are always constantly in election mode,” he said.
