KUCHING: Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) secretary general George Lo is in agreement that AirAsia should use aerobridges in all airports in Sarawak.

He also suggested that airlines such as AirAsia who wish to make use of passenger boarding stairs be charged RM100 for each usage.

“The airport authorities should immediately charge RM100 per usage of passenger boarding stairs except for aeroplanes that are too small to use aerobridges,” he said in a statement today.

By doing so, he said this will deter AirAsia’s practice of putting its passengers through the inconvenience of using passenger boarding stairs “just so the budget airline could save a few ringgit”.

Lo was responding to Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin’s remark on Wednesday where he had urged AirAsia Berhad’s management to use aerobridges in all airports in Sarawak with the exception of when such a facility is fully occupied.

Lee had questioned why the aerobridges were not used for AirAsia’s domestic flights, particularly in Sarawak, despite such services being available to its passengers at KLIA2 and at airports outside the country.

Based on information from Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, he said fees charged for the use of aerobridges at the four airports in Sarawakw was only RM85 per usage.

While Lo agrees with the call made by Lee, he also questioned whether the Transport Minister has no power in addressing this issue other than to appeal to AirAsia Berhad’s management.
