Lorry driver, attendant detained for trying to smuggle mangrove logs

KUCHING: A lorry driver and his attendant were detained by the Prevention and Enforcement Unit of the Forest Department for trying to smuggle 196 pieces of mangrove logs recently.

According to the department’s Corporate and Public Relations Unit yesterday, the two men were stopped during a roadblock manned by the department’s Prevention and Enforcement Unit at Jalan Matang, here.

For failing to produce any document related to the logs, they were arrested along with the logs, and were later brought to the Forest Department’s regional office for further investigation.

Meanwhile, in Sungai Sebetong, Kuala Annau, Kelawit in Bintulu, the Forest Department’s Prevention and Enforcement Unit thwarted an attempt to smuggle 500 timber logs without the Property Mark (PM), but only with plastic tags to show the length and diameter of the logs.

According to the Forest Department’s investigating officer, the seized timber were placed in a special pool to avoid detection.
