Firemen douse the fire engulfing the car.

BINTULU: A car caught fire in front of BBC office at Junction 5, here Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters from Bintulu fire station were rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 2.28pm.

Members of the public had tried to put out the fire using five fire extinguishers before the firefighters arrived.

The lorry’s engine compartment is totally damaged by the fire.

The fire which was engulfing the engine compartment  was, however, too big to be put out, and spread to the other parts of the car.

Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire which  caused 80 per cent damage to the car.

No injury was reported in the incident.  The car belongs to Maria Langit, 47, from Rumah Mering, Jambatan Sebemban KM30, Bintulu-Tatau road.

In an unrelated case, a lorry driver, 51, escaped unhurt when the lorry burst into flames at Bintulu-Bakun road at 1.05pm Tuesday.

Firefighters took about an hour to reach the scene about 75km away via the Pan Borneo Highway. They, however, managed to put out the fire and wrapped up the operation at 2.59pm.
