Road closures throughout Kuching city centre announced for 25th Le Tour De Langkawi

KUCHING: Road users are advised to plan ahead when heading towards the city centre on Feb 7 to make way for the 25th Petronas Le Tour De Langkawi cycling event.

Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu told a press conference today at the Sarawak Police Contingent Headquarters that they have identified ten locations where the road closure or diversions will take place in phases between 7am to 11.30am.

“We are expecting heavy traffic during this event, so plan your route early,” Alexson said.

To control and ease the flow of traffic, a total of 373 personnel will be on duty during the event which includes the police, local councils and Rela members.

He added that for those who needed to travel to the city centre should also comply with the signs and directives given to them by the authorities.

Roads and locations which will be closed for the 100km event are Padang Merdeka (start and finish), Jalan Barrack, Jalan Khoo Hun Yeang, Jalan Open Air Market, Jalan Gambier, Jalan Main Baazar, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Abell, Sri Aman roundabout, Jalan Central Timur, Jalan Tan Sri Ong Kee Hui, the Crookshank / Taman Budaya traffic light intersection, Civic Centre, Badruddin traffic lights, RTM traffic lights, Satok flyover, Satok Bridge, Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yaakub, Abang Haji Kipali roundabout, Samariang roundabout, Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yaakub, Sesco roundabout, Jalan Bako, Medan Hamidah roundabout, Jalan Keruing / Bako traffic light, Jalan Demak, Bako roundabout, Senari port traffic lights and Jalan Kampung Bako where the riders will make their u-turn towards the finishing line.

Towards the finishing line at Padang Merdeka, the road closure and diversions will be conducted at the Senari port traffic lights, Bako roundabout, Jalan Keruing / Bako traffic lights, Jalan Keruing / BCCK traffic lights, Jalan Keruing / Bintawa traffic lights, Bintawa 1 roundabout, Bintawa roundabout, Merican Salleh traffic lights, Tanah Putih Clinic traffic lights, i-Com Square roundabout, Sekama / Pending traffic lights, Mendu traffic lights, Jalan Batu Lintang, Wisma Saberkas traffic lights, Badruddin traffic lights, RTM traffic lights, Jalan Haji Taha (underneath the Satok flyover) traffic lights, Padang Pasir roundabout, Jalan Open Air Market, Jalan Gambier, Jalan Main Bazaar, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Abell / Padungan, Everrise Padungan traffic light, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Lebuh Wayang, Jalan Main Baazar, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg and the RTM traffic lights.

The route where the participants will be making the six loops.

The event will also see participants making six loops (31.8km) in the city centre which will involve areas at the RTM / Jalan Satok traffic lights, Jalan Kulas, Jalan Badruddin traffic lights towards RTM, Padang Pasir roundabout, Jalan Haji Taha roundabout, Sri Aman roundabout towards Jalan Padungan, the traffic light at Jalan Abell to Jalan Padungan, Jalan Song Thian Cheok to Jalan Padungan and the Ban Hock roundabout to the traffic light in front of SK St Mary.

“Road closures and the diversions in these areas will be lifted once the participants have passed the area,” said Alexson.

He revealed that 23 schools, 14 villages and ten main premises such as Plaza Merdeka, Wisma Satok and the Kuching Waterfront were located along the route.

The 25th Petronas Le Tour De Langkawi is scheduled to take place from Feb 6 to 15 in nine states including Sabah, Sarawak, Terengganu, Pahang, Federal Territories, Selangor, Perak , Penang and Kedah.

The event is expected to see the participation of 22 teams made up of local and international participants.

The last Le Tour De Langkawi that was held in Sarawak was back in 1997.
