18 fatalities recorded on 12th day of ‘Ops Selamat’

KUCHING: The police have recorded 18 fatalities on the 12th day of ‘Ops Selamat’ which runs from Jan 18 to Feb 1, which is held in conjunction with Chinese New Year celebration.

Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said the number of fatalities had increased by 20 per cent from 15 fatalities in the same period last year.

“The number of road accidents has also increased. We have recorded 638 cases as of Jan 29 compared to 609 cases in the same period last year,” Alexson told a press coference at Sarawak Police contingent headquarters here yesterday.

He said five victims suffered serious injuries while four light injuries from the 638 road accidents.

The police also issued 11,528 summonses for various traffic offences in the period from Jan 18 to 29.

“The offences include jumping the red light, speeding, and overtaking at double lanes,” said Alexson.
