KUCHING: Chinese nationals who returned to Sarawak to resume work before the entry ban must go for a check-up and self-quarantine as a precaution against the Wuhan coronavirus, asserted Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii.

He said their employers must be responsible by sending them for a check-up and imposing self-quarantine to help curb the spread of the deadly virus.

“The ban was enforced only a few days ago. Some came in before the ban. Employers must pay attention to their mainland Chinese workers, send them for a check-up and self-quarantine for 14 days,” Dr Yii told reporters after handing out face masks and hand sanitizers to pupils of Chung Hua Primary Schools (CHPS) No 3 here yesterday.

On hand to receive the supplies were Board of Management for CHPS No1-6 chairman Wong Tiong Hook and CHPS No 3 headmistress Choo Chin Moi.

During the handover, Dr Yii taught some pupils to the proper way to use a face mask according to recommendation of World Health Organisation (WHO)as it would not be purposeful to supply face masks if the young ones had no clue how to use them.

“The slightly light coloured is on the inside with the fold facing upward, the metal plug on your nose. And, wear a three-ply surgical mask,” he explained.

According to Dr Yii, the distribution of face masks began prior to the Lunar New Year celebration. He said his assistant had sourced and brought in these face masks from Penang.

“I believe there are ways we can help to curb the spread of the virus. It is important for the public not to panic, remain calm and do what is necessary.”

He advised individuals who are unwell and those working in public places to put on a face mask as a precaution, adding that it might not be necessary so for those in isolated areas.

“Take necessary precaution, pay attention to personal hygiene. Make sure hands are clean before we touch our face and mouth,” he reminded.

Earlier, Wong called upon the Sarawak government to allocate some funds to help Sarawakians guard against the Wuhan coronavirus.

“I urge the Sarawak government to take this matter seriously. Do not wait until it’s too late to act. Take more stringent control and measures at entry points to safeguard our state,” he said.

Wong thanked Dr Yii for distributing face masks and hand sanitizer to pupils of CHPS No3.
