SIBU: Pelawan assemblyman David Wong yesterday inspected the Sibu Airport Interchange to Sungai Gua work package (WPC07) of  Pan Borneo Highway to check on progress of construction work and road conditions.

He said it was his third inspection tour of the 46km-WPC07 since Dec 2019, and the first one after CNY.

“During my last inspection tour on Jan 17, which was a night inspection tour, we experienced much improvement on the road conditions compared to my first visit in Dec 2019.

Wong (second right) and others take a breather after the inspection tour.

“We have seen seven diversions closed. They are all tar-sealed, barricades rearranged,  road safety improved with more blinkers and illuminated road signs,” he said in a statement received here yesterday.

Wong, who is also DAP Sarawak deputy chairman, said 11 road diversions had been closed so far, which opened up some 20km of new alignment road making traveling  smoother.

“There is another stretch of the old road to be closed by this month, which would open up another 1.6km of new alignment road to traffics.

“There are 28 diversions to be closed before Hari Raya and Gawai Dayak. The contractor is on schedule to close all of them with 11 diversions already closed.

“Works on the Pan Borneo Highway are still in progress, and thus traffic is slow moving due to the works being done.”

He said photos posted on social media describing the road as ‘moon roads’ were things of the past.

During the inspection yesterday, Wong admitted to seeing potholes at certain stretches, which the contractor had promised to rectify.
