KUCHING: A 37-year-old woman was detained when 79 protected animals including 50 different species of birds were found in her possession at a house in Jalan Krokong, Bau yesterday.

General Operations Force (GOF) commander SAC Dato Khaw Kok Chin in a press conference said the raid was carried out at 10.45am based on a tip-off and surveillance carried out by the authorities.

“During the raid, 50 different species of birds, 11 exotic chickens, 16 tortoises and two exotic ducks with an estimated value of RM92,000 were seized,” said Khaw to a press conference at the GOF headquarters in Batu Kawa this morning.

He said the suspect also failed to produce the relevant documents for the animals, which are protected under the Sarawak Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998.

Among the seized birds were a cockatiel, the green peacock and the sulphur-crested cockatoo.

The seized animals were later handed to the Sarawak Forestry Corporation for further action.

The case, he said, will be investigated under Section 29(1) of the Sarawak Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998.

Also present at the press conference was SFC Kuching compliance supervisor Joseph James.
