KUCHING: Eight secondary school students travelling in a school bus were lucky to have escaped unhurt when they were involved in an accident with a lorry near Kampung Jerok Telagus, Jalan Serian – Sri Aman at around 6am this morning.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) in a statement said the lorry, which was transporting fertiliser, was believed to have lost control and rear ended the right side of the bus.

The school students, including the bus driver, managed to alight the bus safely and received outpatient treatment at Serian Hospital.

According to Bomba, two of the lorry passengers were still trapped inside the driver’s cabin upon their arrival at the scene, while the lorry driver was extricated by members of the public prior to their arrival.

Personnel from the Serian fire station managed to extricate both passengers with a specialised rescue tool.

One of the passengers had broken his left leg, while the other suffered bodily injuries in the accident.

The operation ended at 8.24am.
