SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) and several others will hold a series of activities in conjunction with Earth Hour and Love Earth Day 2020.

According to the organising chairperson, Cr Jenny Ting, the tentative activities would be held in February, March and April.

“In February, the activities are Earth Ranger 2020 which is an anti illegal dumping in Teku Phase 3. It is a project of Junior Chamber International (JCI) Sibu, SMC and JKKK Teku,” she added.

The event will be held on Feb 29.

“Also planned in February will be Tree-Planting and the Video-Making competition.

“The Tree Planting project will be done by SMC Landscaping Section while the Video-Making competition is by JCI Sibu,” added Ting.

She said the tentative activities in March include Park & Ride event and Carbon Free Day on March 21, adding two buses would be provided for the free ride programme along selected routes in town.

“The Park & Ride event which is free-of-charge is a project by the I-Cycle, SMC, and Lanang and Sg Merah bus companies.

“Another activity also to be held on March 21 is the Flee Market Sale at the covered car park in Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang,” she said.

The Earth Hour is scheduled to be held on March 28 at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang, and is a project of SMC and Sibu Lions Club.

“On April 18, the Love Earth Day exhibition and closing ceremony will be held at Wisma Sanyan lobby.

“It is a project by SMC, Pelita Towerview Sdn Bhd and JCI Sibu,” she said.

Another activity is the Video Presentation/Awareness Talk on Waste Segregation and Composting to be held by Persatuan Warga Emas (Enoch).

“The Waste Segregation and Composting project by Enoch is an ongoing project throughout the year which involves educating students about it.

“However, the date and venue have not been fixed yet,” Ting added.

Ting said this year is the 13th year SMC is organising the event in collaboration with many other organisations since 2008.

“The theme for this year’s programme is ‘Climate Action’ where everyone at all levels must play their part in protecting earth and its precious environment not only for us but also for future generations,” she added.

On a different note, Ting said their ‘no plastic straw’ rule had so far been well received, and SMC was still closely monitoring it.
