Septuagenarian killed after crashing head-on with garbage truck in Saratok

SARATOK: An elderly man was killed in an accident after the car he was driving collided with a garbage (medical waste) truck along Jalan Kedap, about 16km from here this morning.

Saratok district police chief DSP Mordani Tanin confirmed the fatal accident, with the deceased identified as 71-year-old Jonathan Tinggang Empeni.

The accident happened at around 8.20am when the car driven by Tinggang from Betong to Sarikei went out of control and collided with an oncoming garbage truck as it entered the opposite lane.

Tinggang, who was pinned to his seat, was extricated from the wreckage by firemen but was declared dead at the scene by paramedics after he succumbed to serious bodily injuries, Mordani said.

The driver and attendant in the 10-tonne garbage truck were unhurt in the accident, he added.

The police are currently investigating the accident under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The victim’s body has been sent to Forensic Unit of Saratok Hospital with a postmortem scheduled to take place tomorrow (February 7).
