KUCHING: Eight students were lucky not to be seriously hurt when their school bus was involved in a collision with a lorry near Kampung Jerok Telagus, Jalan Serian-Sri Aman early yesterday.

A handout combo photo from Bomba shows the scene of the accident.

The students, three boys and five girls aged between 13 and 17, received outpatient treatment at Serian Hospital along with the 34-year-old bus driver, according to a Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) spokesperson.

“Firefighters were deployed to the scene to extricate the lorry’s two attendants. The lorry driver had earlier been helped out of the vehicle by members of the public,” said the spokesperson.

It was revealed that the lorry was transporting fertiliser when the accident happened around 6am.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu in a statement said one of the lorry attendants later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at the Balai Ringin health clinic.

“The deceased, identified as Jong Khiam Yuan, 21, died from internal injuries,” he said, adding the lorry driver and second attendant were treated for their injuries at Serian Hospital before being referred to Sarawak General Hospital later yesterday.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
