SIBU: A total of seven students from Chinese independent schools here received scholarships yesterday from the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching.

Seven students from other divisions would have the funds transferred directly into their accounts.

Sarawak United Association of Private Chinese Secondary Schools Management Board president Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau said the scholarships totalling RM120,000 came under the 2019 quota.

He explained each student would get RM8,500 as part of incentives to enable them to further their studies in China.

“It is with great appreciation that the Chinese Consulate General in Kuching has made such an effort to help the local students who have a strong desire to further their studies in China,” Lau told a press conference.

He said many students now opted to further their studies in China and the scholarships would relieve their financial burdens.

Lau added for this year the Consulate-General would allocate RM160,000 in scholarships, with RM10,000 each reserved for two non-Chinese students from Chinese independent schools.

The closing date to apply is May 31.

Students interested can contact their respective Chinese independent secondary schools for details.
