KUCHING: A plan to set up a ‘middle person register’ will start in April to identify individuals who purchase agriculture produce directly from farmers, says Federal Agricultural and Marketing Authority (Fama) chairman Ishak Ismail.

“With the registration of middle person, we can identify who they are, what their trades are, and where they are based in,” he said at the ‘My Best Buy’ event on Padang Merdeka here on Thursday evening.

He pointed out that Fama was in the midst of setting up the necessary infrastructure for the register, adding that the registration process would involve all points in the value chain – starting from farms down to the consumers.

Once the register had been set up, Ishak said Fama would be able to communicate quickly with all stakeholders, and realise its target of increasing the farmers’ income.

It was previously reported that middle persons were required to register with Fama as authorised marketers, in accordance with the Fama Act 1965.

The move would enable the agency to take firm action against those who breached regulations, such as indiscriminately increasing the prices of produce.
