SIBU: Phase II of the Kampung Jeriah flood mitigation project started last month and is scheduled to be completed on Jan 7 next year.

Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing Dr Annuar Rapaee said the second phase to address perennial flooding at the low-lying village of about 200 houses would cover Lorong Kampung Jeriah Utara 2 as well as Lorong Kampung Jeriah Barat 1, 3, and 5.

“This RM9-million phase consists of road improvement or piled embankment road stretching 1.52km besides drainage improvement.

“Piled embankment road here means that this stretch of road will not sink.

“Of course, there will be some crossovers to link to houses like that of phase one. Therefore, upon completion of the entire flood mitigation project, it will address flood problem in almost all areas in this village. I believe it will result in a more conducive dwelling environment for the villagers,” he said during a site visit to monitor the progress of the project yesterday.

Dr Annuar said phase one of the project was completed on Nov 30 last year at a cost of RM7 million.

“In fact, this year we have not received any complaints on flooding from the villagers.

“I believe this is due to two factors – the completed phase one has started to play its role, while the other being the drainage improvement works done by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage at main Oya Road, resulting in smoother draining out of water; unlike in the past, where water became stagnant, causing flooding every time after downpours,” he said.

Zone councillor Zaiton Abdul Kader said a special working committee like for phase one would soon be set up for the second phase involving representatives from the lanes covered.

“The committee will oversee the works from time-to-time and to report to the YB (Dr Annuar).

“We will also sit in the progress meeting with the consultant and contractor.”
