Customs raids warehouse, seizes contraband worth RM4.6 million

SIBU: The Royal Malaysia Customs Department confiscated 5.38 million sticks of cigarettes, 3.8 litres of liquor, a lorry and a 20-footer container valued at about RM4.6 million inclusive of tax during a raid of a warehouse at Jalan Sungai Nyigu Ata here at about 11am Thursday.

Sarawak State Customs director Dato Sharifah Halimah said intelligence officers from Kuching Customs Department also assisted.

During the raid at the warehouse, Sharifah said officers seized liquor of various brands suspected to be smuggled from the warehouse.

“In the process of the inspection, the officers also came across the lorry which was locked and another container at the warehouse which was staked with cigarettes and liquor,” she said in a media statement.

Sharifah said all the items had been seized and sent to Bintulu enforcement office for further action.

She said the case will be investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.

She also called on the public to inform the department of any smuggling activity, including contraband cigarettes by calling its toll free number at 1-800-88-8855.

The identity of the informants will be kept confidential.
