Passenger killed, driver seriously injured after car rear-ends lorry at Bintulu-Miri road

BINTULU: A male passenger was killed, while the driver was seriously injured when the car they were travelling on rear-ended a lorry at Mile 16, Bintulu-Miri road yesterday.

Bintulu traffic investigation and enforcement chief Insp Jeffery Jembol said the deceased was identified as Layang Munang, 47, from Sungai Plan Jalan Tg Kidurong.

The driver, Lian Munang, 39, was hospitalised after he sustained serious head injuries.

Jeffery said the accident happened at around 7.50pm, when the car collided into the back of the lorry.

Prior to the crash, he said both vehicles were travelling in the left lane from the direction of Bintulu to Miri.

“Due to the impact of the collision, the driver of the car suffered serious head injuries while a passenger was killed at the scene due to severe head injuries,” said Jeffery adding that the 47-year-old lorry driver escaped unhurt.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, Bintulu Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) station chief Christus Buson said they dispatched nine personnel to the scene after received a distress call.

Christus said the two victims were trapped in the vehicle.

Both victims were retrieved from the wreckage, where the injured driver was sent to the hospital.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased was handed over to the police for further action.
