PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Communications and Multimedia has targeted three groups – school children, youth and adults – to become digitally fluent this year.

Its deputy minister Eddin Syazlee Shith said in line with the Safer Internet Day 2020 – Malaysian Edition’s theme “Digital Fluency”, these targeted groups should be equipped with 5K elements, namely “keselamatan siber (cyber safety), komunikasi (communications), pemikiran kritis (critical thinking), kreatif (creative) and kerjasama (cooperation).

“By having all these elements, they would have the knowledge and skills of technology, act ethically and positively and with integrity as a competent digital citizen,” he said in his address at the Safer Internet Day 2020 – Malaysian Edition, here yesterday.

Under the Digital Fluency, Internet users would have a better understanding of the use of technology and make wiser decisions while influencing other users to act positively.

He said these groups were identified as the Internet active users, living in “on-demand” interactive digital culture while social media had become an influential platform in their social lives.

Eddin Syazlee the ministry supported initiatives that foster a positive attitude, ethics and integrity among Malaysians when using technology and Internet facilities.

On the Safer Internet Day, he said it was introduced by Brussels-based InSAFE European Union in 2004 and is celebrated on the second day of the second week in the second month (February) every year, and to date, it is being celebrated by over 150 countries.

This year, the global Internet Safer Day is celebrated with a theme “Together for a Better Internet”.

In Malaysia, the celebration is led by CyberSecurity Malaysia under the Cyber Security Awareness for Everyone (CyberSAFE) Programme. — Bernama
