SIBU: The people are urged to ascertain the veracity of news they receive regarding the coronavirus outbreak to help prevent public panic.

Bukit Assek assemblywomen Irene Chang said when it comes to receiving forwarded material on social media, it is always important to fact-check first before making conclusions or forwarding it to other people.

“We all know that there is a lot of fake news going around and I would like to warn the
people not to fall for all the fake news.

“Whenever you see something or read something, check it out first,” Chang said after the ‘Info on Wheels’ programme at the Central Market, here yesterday.

Chang said in light of the novel coronavirus outbreak, which the World Health Organisation yesterday named Covid-19, it is vitally important that the public listen and adhere to the announcements made or measures introduced by the authorities to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

On the ‘Info on Wheels’ programme, she said it was initiated by the Information Department to deliver information on government initiatives and policies to the people.

“I was informed 365 such programmes have been carried out throughout Sarawak thus far.

“Today, we are giving out pamphlets on Covid-19 to educate the people here and update them on what is happening,” she said.

Others present during the event were Sibu MP Oscar Ling and Lanang MP Alice Lau.
