SHAH ALAM: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail yesterday expressed disbelief over PAS’ plan to table a vote of confidence motion in Dewan Rakyat on Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to remain as Prime Minister.

Dr Wan Azizah said this was because it is unusual for the opposition in the country to give their support to the prime minister, let alone to make such a plan.

When asked to elaborate on the remark, she just smiled and briefly said: “We have been supporting Dr Mahathir long before PAS.”

Dr Wan Azizah was met after opening the Regional Conference on Peaceful Coexistence 2020 here yesterday.

Prior to this, PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man was reported as saying that the tabling of the vote of confidence was decided unanimously by PAS’ central leadership council last week.

Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan has also indicated that the party would back the vote of confidence in Dr Mahathir when it is tabled by PAS in the Dewan Rakyat.

Meanwhile, in her speech opening speech, Dr Wan Azizah said it is everyone’s dream to live in peace and harmony, but such an environment does not come easy.

“It needs each member of the society to play their roles and work together to make the region an exemplary model of peaceful coexistence. But of course, there are many issues that need to be resolved first,” she said.

Relating her experience in studying abroad, the deputy prime minister said it was indeed a valuable lesson for her to develop her ability to adapt to any situation.

“I did get a culture shock because I was in the minority group. But, that was where I learned to survive among the people of different race, religion and lifestyle,” she added. — Bernama
