BINTULU: The Emergency Response Team (ERT) of an oil palm estate in Kuala Tatau, here, was activated yesterday to respond to a fire incident involving their housing quarters.

They were the first to respond when the fire razed the building, dousing it with their own water tanker.

However, the fires spread quickly and levelled the six units to the ground prior to the arrival of the firefighters from Bintulu and Tatau fire stations.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operation centre in a statement said they received a distress call at 11.05am.

Fourteen personnel from Bintulu and Tatau fire stations with two fire engines were dispatched to the scene.

Upon their arrival, the fire has been put under control by the ERT team and the firefighters only carried out overhaul works to ensure the fire had been fully extinguished.

The whole operation ended at 1.15pm.

There were no injuries reported in the incident and the cause of the fire and total loss are still under investigation.
