Drug trafficking accused sentenced to death

TAWAU: A 49-year-old man was yesterday sentenced to death by the High Court here for drug trafficking.

High Court judge Dr Hj Alwi Hj Abdul Wahab sentenced Low Teak Seng to death after finding the accused guilty for trafficking 2599.2 grammes of Methamphetamine under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 (Act 234) and punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act which carries the death sentence.

The accused was charged with committing the offence at Tawau Airport’s police station about 10.50am on February 17, 2017.

Low’s trial commenced on July 23, 2019 with nine witnesses called by the deputy public prosecutor and the accused himself as the defence witness.

When Low was produced in court yesterday for decision, Alwi said he found that the prosecution had proven the case beyond reasonable doubt, therefore, convicted the accused guilty and sentenced him to death by hanging.

Public prosecutor Risal Abd Fikkah stood in for DPP Mark Netto while the accused was represented by assigned counsel Andy Tay.
