RRSS tops Miri schools in track & field c’ships

MIRI: Riam Road Secondary School (RRSS) emerged as overall champion in the Miri Division Inter-School Track & Field Championships held at Miri Stadium from Feb 11 to 14.

The school athletes amassed 416 points from 35 gold, 25 silver and 20 bronze medals.

Coming in second was SMK Chung Hua Miri with 349.5 points from 30 gold, 25 silver and 14 bronze while SMK Lutong finished third with 223 points out of their medal tally of 14 golds, 14 silvers and 15 bronzes.

The meet, which was jointly organised by SMK Chung Hua Miri and SMK Lopeng Tengah, was participated by 32 secondary schools from around Miri, including Tenby International Miri, as well as schools from Long Lama, Marudi and Bekenu.

Officiating the closing ceremony Miri MP Dr Michael Teo Yu Keng called for active participation in sports among students as he strongly believes sports could effectively guard students against unhealthy activities.

“Whenever participating sports event, we tend to focus on achieving the top placing to determine the amount of hard work that has been put in.

“Indeed, while it is a good platform, let’s remember that the consistent training and balance helps produce students to not only become successful athletes, but the physical and mental training help shapes a person too.

“In fact, sports meet indirectly educate students that success can only be achievable through hard work, proper planning, dedication and also sacrifice,” he said.

Reuben Valen Samen (right) of RRSS and Ng Jing Xuan of SMK Chung Hua Miri emerged as top athletes for the meet.

Meanwhile, Reuben Valen Samen of RRSS and Ng Jing Xuan of SMK Chung Hua Miri were adjudged the sportsman and sportswoman of the championships.

Dr Teo also made a pledge of RM30,000 to the Miri Division Principal’s Council.
