SIBU: Hot favourites SMK Sacred Heart retained the Sibu Division Inter-School Athletics Championships for the 7th consecutive year.

The school athletes swept both the Boys U-18 and U-15 titles but lost out to SMK Sedaya in the Boys U-14 category.

Chief coach Ting Kung Jin admitted it was a disappointment not to carry off the U-14 title as well.

The school had swept all four titles in the past five years.

‘Rest assure. We will rebound and, hopefully, we will continue to perform well in all categories in future championships,” he said.

For Boys U-18, they scored 160 points to beat nearest rival SMK Sedaya (100 points) followed by SMK Kanowit (76).

For Boys U-15, the school bagged 119 points against SMK Kanowit (94.5) and SMK Sedaya (84).

For Boy’s U-14, SMK Sedaya won with 91 points followed by SMK Sacred Heart (78) and SMK Kanowit (65.5).

Ting added that the icing on the cake for SMK Sacred Heart was the outstanding performance of distance runner Lucas Wong Sie Hong who broke two records, including one state record.

The state record was in the 3000m open when the 18-year-old clocked a time of 9min 49.90sec.

His other record was in the Boys U-18 2000m steeplechase with a time of 6min 43.2sec.

Lucas was adjudged the Best Sportsboy for U-18.

Another outstanding athlete from the school was Benedict Duau Dennis Unchat who won the U-15 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay and silver medal in 4x400m relay to walk off with the Best Sportsboy trophy for U-15.

Ting revealed that the school athletes had been training regularly under various coaches including Ling Ngie MIng, Tang Chuo Kiew, Cheng Fan Kong and Phan Fuo Sz.

“All the coaches are working very hard to ensure that the school will retain its supremacy in athletics which is the traditional forte of the school in the past decades,” he said.

Ting also expressed gratitude to the parents, teachers, old boys and the school principal David Teo for their support.
