MIRI: The breakdown of votes cast in the Miri parliamentary constituency during the 2018 general election shows Pakatan Harapan (PH) is capable of winning the state constituencies of Senadin, Pujut and Piasau in the next state election.

This was stated by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Youth chief Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir who said an analysis of the 35,739 votes secured by Miri MP Dr Michael Teo favoured PH in all the three state constituencies.

“PH has the opportunity to win the three seats this coming state election, and must now start going to the ground to meet voters,” said Akmal, who is also Johor Bahru MP.

Speaking during the launching of the election machinery of PH Northern Sarawak cum Chinese New Year gathering here Sunday, he said the chance is there for the coalition to form a new state government.

“We must work hard to deliver the promises made in the last general election, so that the people will have confidence in our ability to govern. We need to constantly go to the ground to reach out to the community at large,” he added.

In the 2018 general election, Dr Teo garnered 35,739 votes against Datuk Sebastian Ting’s 22,076 votes. There are 80,386 registered voters in Miri parliamentary constituency.

Some 2,000 people attended the gathering, including Dr Teo, PKR’s Taman Medan assemblyman Syamsul Firdaus Mohamed Supri, and Parti Amanah Negara Miri branch chairman Yeo Kian Leong.

Senadin is represented by state Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin, and Piasau by Ting who is Tourism, Arts and Culture Assistant Minister – both of Gabungan Parti Sarawak. The Pujut seat is currently vacant following the recent disqualification of its assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon from Democratic Action Party.
