Woman cheats death as car bursts into flames

The car that was completely destroyed after it caught on fire after colliding with a tree.

MIRI: A woman in her 30s had a close shave with death after her car crashed into a tree and caught fire at the Jalan Kuala Baram Bypass near Shell Station Permyjaya last night.

She had been driving alone during the 11.05pm incident, and managed to escape the burning car with the help of passer-bys.

She sustained burns on her hands and leg and was quickly rushed to Miri Hospital in an ambulance.

State Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said that the woman had been heading towards the Miri city centre from Brunei.

“Upon reaching the Permyjaya Shell Station, the victim suddenly lost control of her car and skidded to the right side of the road before crashing into a road divider and then a tree.

“The impact caused the car to catch fire,” Alexson said in a statement today.

Passer-bys who saw the incident immediately came to rescue the victim, who was already injured and panicked inside the vehicle.

Alexson said the police are investigating the case under Rule 10 LN 166/59 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959.

Meanwhile, a team from Lopeng Fire and Rescue station also rushed to the scene to put out the fire.

The car was completely destroyed in the incident.
