MIRI: Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) is calling on Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari to ‘be more assertive’ in getting the federal government to fulfil its promise to repair the state’s dilapidated schools.

Its state information chief Zharudin Narudin said the Sarawak government needs to keep pressing Putrajaya on the issue, particularly as the state has held up its end of the deal by paying RM700 million out of the RM1 billion in the contra agreement.

“I am deeply disappointed with what has happened to the promise to repair the 1,020 dilapidated schools in the state which the PH (Pakatan Harapan) government has so far failed to fulfil.

“I call on Abang Johari to be more assertive and determined in pursuing this matter until PH fulfils its promise and repairs all the affected schools,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Speaking to reporters after an event on Tuesday, Abang Johari accused the federal government of failing to keep its word on the contra deal to repair the state’s 1,020 dilapidated schools.

He said even though the Sarawak government had already paid RM700 million, not a single dilapidated school in the state has been fixed.

“When we (state government) paid RM700 million (of the contra deal) to fix our dilapidated schools, they (Putrajaya) said must follow the new way.

“But not a single (dilapidated) school has been fixed, although money has been paid,” said the chief minister.
